How We Operate

Solar Power + Electric Equipment

Our Nursery is completely off grid and powered by solar. After working closely with Celtic Solar, here on the Sunshine Coast, we have achieved our solar goals. Our stand-alone office building and workstation out in the field have panels lining their roofs, filtering sunlight perfectly! The solar power runs our office space, 4 golf buggies, electric loaders, irrigation, potting machine and anything else that requires power!

Recycled Materials

We use many different recycled materials in the Nursery and intend to use more and more! Probably our most used product in the Nursery is our recycled coconut fiber, a fair trade product from India and Sri Lanka. We use it in two forms, coarse chip and fine pith. In combination with the coconut fibre we mix in our natural additives and food, to make the perfect growing medium. It’s high moisture retention and high air porosity makes it light weight and great for drainage. It’s also sterile, pH neutral, and has a natural fungicide within its oils, all which deter disease. Another thing to love about this natural product is that it’s clean to work with and gentle on your skin. We have always loved the idea of growing a Palm in a Palm!

Our pots are made from recycled plastics, made in Italy, supplied to us by Fernland Agencies, another great local business. Our workstation in the Nursery is made up of 5 re-purposed shipping containers, spaced apart to create different workspaces and storage. They also look architecturally appealing, which is a theme throughout the Nursery, clean lines, minimalist design, and functionality.

Chemical-Free

We are a chemical free Nursery and very proud of it! We wanted to minimise the use of harmful chemicals as much as we could and have found great success using natural fertiliser, tonics and bacteria’s. All supplied to us by Nutri-tech and Fernland Agencies, fantastic businesses here on the Sunshine Coast. We deliver our organics, including beneficial bacteria’s, through our irrigation system, known as fertigation. This supplies food and protection to strengthen our plants, with an emphasis on improving their immune system. We also spray our plants regularly with silica, food, and natural tonics. All weeds throughout the Nursery are suppressed naturally; we do not use chemical herbicides.

Environmentally Conscious

Fortunately, our Nursery doesn’t have any adverse effects on our environment. What better than to be constantly adding more and more plant life and oxygen to our earth. We also have an abundance of native wildlife that call our Nursery home.

We are very proud of what we have created at Eumundi Palms. We believe sustainability is a process and we are always looking for the next environmentally friendly product or innovation to adopt. Get in touch if you have a product or innovation you think we should know about!

Growing

The Nursery has always grown its own Palms and plants, many from seed. Growing from seed has meant we can introduce some very special and rare Palms to our Nursery! We acquire seed from all over the world, exotic places like Hawaii, New Guinea, Indonesia, and New Caledonia, to name a few!

At our new location in Eumundi, we are very excited to continue growing our own Palms and plants on an even bigger scale, larger quantities, and pot sizes! We pride ourselves on our high quality and variety of plants we grow. We grow one of, if not the biggest selection of rare Palms in Australia, including many Australian native Palms, and we intend to expand this already extensive list.

We have several growing grounds in Northern NSW, North Queensland, and Far North Queensland. We give our plants the best start in life by growing them in their optimal environment. Growing some of our tropical plants and Palms in North and Far North Queensland is desirable as they thrive in the tropical, humid environment. They can grow at a much faster rate in these conditions. We then return our plants to the home Nursery in beautiful Eumundi, for acclimatisation.
